Buyer Request
Analyze the provided original metal music box, re-create it exactly as a 3D model and print a working light-weight alternative for manufacture.
Design Iterations and Measurement
The original enclosure has multiple complex structures that must be perfectly placed such that all of the components mesh correctly to produce a recognizable tune.
Design started with the overall rectangular shape. From there, each tower and/or extrusion was modeled and the distance of that extrusion to it’s nearest edge was measured.
The first prints were made to solely verify that the pieces lined up correctly and made a sound at all. The subsequent prints were then used to tune the sound further and achieve the highest level of clarity.
The final design included an added lip and snap on top covers for the main driving gear. It was found that even with the original metal enclosure, the plate had too much play or variation in its positioning dependent on how carefully an individual assembled the music box. To fix this, the lip on the plate’s resting block was made to achieve near-perfect alignment every time.
The music box project allowed for the testing of my metrology skills and my ability verify measurements. Reverse engineering the object was a welcome challenge and the end result of hearing the “happy birthday” tune as the music box came to life was an unexpected bonus.
